1. Public
treatment of waste water and sewage
The Government has tasked the SPGE, together with the
sewage treatment operators, to ensure the public treatment
of domestic waste water. This implies the establishment
and construction of public waste treatment systems such
as treatment stations and mains drainage systems.
Overriding priority is given to settlements with more
than 2,000 Inhabitant Equivalents (IEs) as the European
Union has decided that the waste water from such settlements
must be processed through treatment systems before 31
December 2005.
Certain settlements with less than 2,000 Inhabitant Equivalents
(IEs) may also have treatment plants installed where there
is a major environmental protection argument.
2. Protecting Water Collection Sites
In co-operation with the bodies authorised to retain,
or extract, water, SPGE undertakes, and finances, the
necessary works to protect such sites on the basis of
the action programme decided by the government.
3. Sewer Systems - A Priority
The SPGE has been mandated by the Government of Wallonia
to ensure, in cooperation with the relevant local authorities,
as a priority that sewer systems are constructed for settlements
with more than 2,000 Inhabitant Equivalents (IEs).
