BONE/RAW MILK 1993-1999

MIXCXCIII

In the cellar area of the Konschtaus beim engel an open wooden box coated with a mixture of paraffin-wax and titanium white and filled with raw milk is placed on the floor; a gilded bone floats on the surface. Over a period of two weeks the milk clots, immobilising the bone in the now viscous matter. After the exhibition the box is sealed with a pane of glass and put away in the studio.

Three years later the piece is brought out again for the exhibition Art and Aids. What was viscous matter has now hardened into a parchment crust; the gilded bone is partly oxidised. The piece is placed on a plinth draped with black fabric. After the exhibition the piece is stored away again in the studio.

MIXCXCVIII

For Merotum, an installation based on the principle of merotomy : the procedure of cutting a cell into separate parts to study their capacity for survival and development, the piece, which has undergone further changes over the intervening two years, is filmed for a video sequence of the installation.

The way in which the piece has now evolved incites me to photograph it. The image is rather like an icon; a fin-de-si*cle gilt frame seems appropriate for this bone/raw milk now presented in digital form.

Dans la cave du "Konschtaus beim engel" est déposé au sol un récipient en bois tapissé d'un mélange de paraffine et blanc de titane, rempli de lait cru; à la surface du lait flotte un os doré. Durant une quinzaine de jours, le lait caille et l'os se fige dans cette nouvelle matière onctueuse. Après l'exposition la pièce est scellée par une vitre et remisée à l'atelier.

Reprise de la pièce stockée depuis trois ans pour l'exposition "Art And Aids". La matière onctueuse a fait place à une croûte parcheminée; la dorure de l'os est partiellement oxydée. La pièce est posée sur un socle couvert d'un tissu noir tendu. Après l'exposition, la pièce est rangée à l'atelier.

MIXCXCVIII

Pour "Merotum", installation basée sur le principe de la mérotomie: "Opération consistant à détacher d'un organisme vivant un fragment plus ou moins considérable pour observer les phénomènes de survie que ce fragment peut présenter". La pièce qui s'est encore développée pendant deux ans est filmée pour une séquence vidéo de l'installation.

MIXCXCIX

L'état d'avancement de la pièce m'incite à prendre un cliché. L'image m'apparaît comme une sorte d'icône; un encadrement doré manière "fin de siècle" me semble tout indiqué pour cet os/lait cru maintenant digitalisé.
